With a struggling economy and an unpredictable stock market, mixed generations are sharing their homes. In-law suites are often created by converting a room in the house into a livable suite.
Tips to make it work for everyone:
· Check your local zoning by-laws and get a building permit if needed.
· Consider the future health and accessibility (stairs) of your in-laws.
· Try to keep your space separate from their space to maintain each other’s privacy.
· Install grab bars in washrooms, easy-open drawers, and ample lighting.
· Install safety features (fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide detectors).
· Install motion sensitive lights to reduce the risk of falling.
· Install an intercom system so your in-laws can reach you in the event of an emergency.
