- Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless and odourless gas. Because it can’t be seen, tasted, or smelled, it can affect people before they even know it’s there.
- CO is harmful because it will rapidly accumulate in the blood, depleting the ability of blood to carry oxygen.
- Super-heated air and gases rise quickly and produce what is known as a “hot” fire. Unconsciousness and death can occur within minutes. Bedrooms located on the upper floor of residences are frequently subjected to these conditions in the advanced stages of fire.
- There are three basic types of CO sensors – metal oxide, biomimetic, and electrochemical. Most CO detectors are designed to give an alarm when CO levels reach a high level in a short time; detectors that display both high and low levels are more expensive.
- The National Fire Code of Canada provides minimum fire safety protection and prevention requirements for all buildings.
- CO and smoke detectors can be monitored with your security system.
